Why do I need to learn how to ‘live’ on the web? I already knew about the digital world for socializing and school purposes, do we really need this module?

Before this module, those were the questions in my head. However, after every topic of this module, I realised how I managed my digital profile for the past few years were very impractical. Now that I have a year more to be a working adult and six more months to the start of internship, I should be worried. The module I thought that was unnecessary turns out to be my saviour!

1. My online identity

Before (Facebook)

Albums and unnecessary posts exposed to public

After (New Facebook Account)

Albums exposed to public

The Internet Privacy Prank triggered me even further to hide my privacy because our details online can be easily retrieved. Also, Jeanne and Mark Sullivan mentioned why internet is a dangerous place due to the huge database. As shown above, I have reduced the number of albums exposed to the public and how i “hate mugging and want to party” are things that make me look unprofessional and playful. Therefore, such posts are deleted! In addition, my Twitter and Instagram accounts are now private too.

One of the articles and blogs that caught my attention was the impactful video Tor shared about multiple identities. We all behave differently as a student and as a friend. Do you write notes about what your friends are talking about just because you do that in lectures? Of course not! Thus, I believe in having two Facebook Accounts- Personal and Work.

2. It’s time to sell myself on LinkedIn!

After reading many reliable statistics on which social media employers use to recruit, I know it’s time to do something about my LinkedIn account.

Previously, I created LinkedIn Account but did not fill up anything because I was still clueless on how to use it. After this module, I have changed to a professional picture, updated many details and joined useful groups. Though it might take a longer time, I will start seeking recommendation from my colleagues/employers and start connecting with other professionals too!

3. Be ethical in social media

As I will be starting the new phase of a working adult in no time, I need to know how to be an ethical working adult. I will take note of my behaviour on social media because as an employee, every thing I do affects the reputation of the company.

I used to post such mean tweets on my personal account because i believe it is my space and I can do whatever I want. Now that I know more about ethics, I will never post such things because it doesn’t reflect well on me and the company I’m working for in the future.

In conclusion..

Safekeeping my privacy, using social media professionally and keeping my ethics strong on social media are important lessons I have gotten from this module. I’m thankful for the lessons learnt about the digital world because now, the chances of getting a job will be higher!
